VURA helps patients understand and access medication options for sexual health, HIV prevention, and STD/STI care. Medication decisions should always be made with a licensed healthcare provider based on your test results, symptoms, exposure, medical history, allergies, pregnancy status, kidney/liver health, and other medications.
PrEP is used before possible HIV exposure to help prevent HIV. Options may include daily pills or injectable PrEP for eligible patients.
PEP is emergency medication after a possible HIV exposure. It must be started quickly and is typically taken for 28 days when prescribed.
Treatment depends on the infection. VURA can help with testing, results review, prescriptions when appropriate, and follow-up care for infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and other conditions.
Doxy-PEP is doxycycline taken after sex to reduce the chance of certain bacterial STIs in selected patients. CDC recommends counseling gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and transgender women who had syphilis, chlamydia, or gonorrhea in the past 12 months about Doxy-PEP, using shared decision-making with a provider.
Doxy-PEP is not for everyone. A provider can help decide whether it is appropriate.
